My thesis focused on Moluccan drug users and drug aid projects in the Netherlands. With my thesis, my involvement with the Moluccan community became part of my academic career. This involvement started in 1977 when I joined the Moluccan youth organization Gerakan Pattimura. We organized training courses and published a magazine. Gerakan Pattimura was part of the left-wing Moluccan youth movement. Through this youth movement, I became involved with the Indonesia Committee, a solidarity movement that criticized human rights violations in Indonesia under General Suharto.

Research

After graduating, I focused on what we now call postcolonial migration from Indonesia, Indonesian history, and modern Indonesia. I was involved in several large-scale studies. For example, I was coordinator of the Oral History Indonesia Foundation (1997-2001), for which we interviewed 724 people about their lives in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia. Between 2017 and 2023, I worked as a researcher on a major research program on Dutch violence in Indonesia between 1945 and 1949. In 2003, together with Dutch and Indonesian colleagues from the KITLV (Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies), I initiated the audiovisual documentation project, Recording the Future, which documents daily life at eight locations in Indonesia. I conducted research on Indisch organizations in the Netherlands. And from 2001 to 2005, I was a co-researcher in the major academic study on the history of Moluccans in the Netherlands, conducted under the auspices of the Moluccan Historical Museum. This resulted in 2006 in the reference work “In Nederland gebleven” (Remained in the Netherlands), which I co-authored with Henk Smeets. The book was republished in 2025, supplemented with a chapter on what had happened since 2006. Three times I conducted short-term research on young people from the Caribbean in the Netherlands.

Working at

I have carried out my work from several locations: Erasmus University, the Indonesian Oral History Foundation, and the Moluccan Welfare Consultative Body. I conducted several studies from my alma mater, the University of Amsterdam, where I received my PhD in 1996. Twice from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, first as a recently graduated anthropologist and in 2017 after my appointment as endowed professor of Moluccan migration and culture in comparative perspective at the Faculty of Social Sciences. This chair was established because the Moluccan Historical Museum provided research funding. The KITLV, where I worked, was willing to give me one day a week off for this. Since 2001, KITLV has been the basis and foundation for much of my research. After my retirement in 2022, I remained affiliated with KITLV as an honorary fellow and as an emeritus professor at VU Amsterdam. I also had the honor of being appointed visiting professor at Pattimura University in Ambon in 2023 and 2024.

Publications

Over the years, I have written and published scholarly and popular scientific articles, columns, and blogs. These publications are not always easy to find. Some because they appeared in print journals held in university libraries. Others because digital newsletters have disappeared due to digital migrations, meaning, for example, the more than 60 columns I wrote for the newsletter of the Moluccan Historical Museum can no longer be read.

This difficulty in finding them is the reason for this website. It is important that the people I have written about have access to what I have done with their stories and my observations.

Honorary Fellow — KITLV, LeidenEmeritus Professor — Vrije Universiteit AmsterdamVisiting Professor — Pattimura University On this website, I bring together and make available as many of my publications as possible.
